Someone come get in my bed and let’s stay up all night talking.
What?
As you all know it’s been a very intense week for us fashionistas as we were faced with the chaos, stress, but more importantly the excitement of New York Fashion Week. And if that wasn’t enough, some of us endured cross-country travel just to see what was going on over on the business end of the spectrum— I was one who fell into this category. And as such, I made the most of this opportunity during my stay at WWDMAGIC and made a sincere effort to network and meet with as many industry professionals and fashion-lovers as possible.
On the first day, I participated in the Designer Roundtable at the FN Platform where I was lucky enough to meet New York based footwear designer Matt Bernson. As we got to talking I realized that I could quickly identify with Matt’s brand. His primary emphasis on design is lifestyle. It is based on the idea of creating a shoe that eludes both comfort yet trendy to compliment the modern woman while still being deemed as wearable. Matt also draws a lot of his inspiration from menswear, where he uses masculine designs as a basis and gives them feminine edge.
To learn more about his urban brand, he graciously allowed me to quickly interview him in the midst of everything and I was able to re-create his answers with as much detail as I possibly could. So with that here’s a a tid-bit of what Matt had to say:
Tell us a little about yourself.
I live in Tribecca, I have a dog Abraham that I bring to work with me everyday. He makes life enjoyable and he is an integral part of what’s going on. As far as fashion goes, I’ve always been interested and obsessive, I never thought I would be in it, it was always like a dream.
How would you describe your design process?
I used to design everything in a factory, I would build them with craftsmen while there. As time has gone on, the planning and design process has become a lot more formalized. (In regards to making concept boards) I do “concept messes,” where there is a lot of different images and ideas, there’s a lot more content (to work with)— You never know what the outcome is going to be in that state, but it’s worth it.
Who is the Matt Bernson girl?
It’s a wide range of people, it’s for what I hope is a smart, creative, interesting woman. It’s mothers, daughters, it’s a crazy range. I think of someone from downtown, it’s what people would wear when they’re relaxed.
